“It’s the spot right behind where I hook my bra.” “It’s where I feel tension when someone tells me to stand up straight.” “I have no sense of that spot on my back at all.” There is a place in your thoracic spine that is a nexus where muscles from the top and bottom of you meet. It is where the function of rotation is crucial. It also happens to be the location, if you go through to the front of yourself, of your heart chakra. Coincidence? I think not. Our posture, emotions and tensions are all related. And how the ribs interact with this center point makes the difference between the flexibility of a rib basket, one that moves and bends as needed and the prison of a rib cage. A colleague of mine once called this spot the “key to the kingdom” because once this is free, both upper and lower torso are liberated. This morning we will learn how to use that key.
